Studio
Under the direction of Joshua Bynum, the OBU low brass studio features a select group of musicians who participate in virtually every instrumental ensemble offered at the University. Combined with private instruction, this extensive ensemble experience helps to prepare our students for successful careers in both music performance and education.
Students receive weekly lessons which focus on the fundamental aspects of low brass performance. Special attention is given to developing a consistent warm-up and daily routine. Each student is given an individual course of study which covers the standard solo and etude material. In addition, fundamental progress is monitored through bi-weekly studio warm-up sessions.
Students are required to participate with the low brass ensemble. The group rehearses 2 days a week (scheduled at the beginning of each semester). Performances are given both on campus and at various schools and churches.
Members of the studio attend weekly master classes which cover important topics of low brass performance and pedagogy. Past classes have covered issues such as:
Trombones
- Instrument Maintenance
- Fundamentals of Ensemble Performance
- Ensemble Etiquette
- Effective Practice Strategies
- Performance Anxiety
- Historical Musicians
- Creating Opportunities
