Mission Statement, Goals, and Objectives
Mission
The Department of Church Music at OBU exists to prepare men and women as leaders who can creatively integrate music and the arts into the worship and witness of the church as a community of faith in the 21st century.
Goals
In fulfilling this Mission, graduates will be equipped to confidently and competently:
1) Plan, lead, and evaluate corporate worship experiences.
2) Incorporate various arts into the worship life of a congregation or ministry setting, while honoring biblical principles and the church’s past, present, and future.
3) Apply appropriate musicianship and individual skill as a vocalist, keyboardist, or instrumentalist.
4) Serve as a minister-musician and administrative leader in diverse ministry environments.
5) Provide leadership to various vocal or instrumental ensembles.
6) Work well with other leaders in mutual ministry endeavors.
7) Provide guidance and training for other music and worship leaders.
Objectives
As means of attaining these Goals, our graduates will be able to:
1) Articulate a discerning response to a call to ministry in light of their faith commitment, innate skills, and spiritual gifts.
2) Contextualize ministry in light of the theological, spiritual, liturgical, missiological, and cultural dimensions of worship, music, and the arts.
3) Communicate the significance of the arts for the ministries of the church.
4) Choose, prepare, and lead music for the congregation, ensembles, and/or soloists.
5) Utilize appropriate administrative practices in organizing and leading music and worship ministries.
6) Conduct at an appropriate level for local congregations and other ministry settings.
7) Exhibit appropriate levels of skill in principal and secondary applied performance areas.
