Modern Physics
Assignments
Instructions (Read Carefully)
1. All assignments must be submitted using a standard word
processor with an equation editor (e.g., MS Word, Word Perfect, etc.). Handwritten
assignments will not be accepted. If you are not familiar with this procedure,
the first question or two may take a little longer but you will quickly become
proficient. To create an equation in MS Word, click on ‘Insert’ from the menu
options at the top of the window. In the drop down menu select ‘Object ...’ and
then select an equation tool, for example ‘Microsoft Equation 3.0’. There are
several benefits for you with this procedure.
i) Whether you intend to be a professional engineer, a physics
graduate student, or a researcher in any capacity, this is a skill you must
acquire in order to prepare technical reports and research papers. Submitting
your Modern Physics assignments in this way will be good skills preparation for
your professional future.
ii)
This will force you to organize your solutions in a clear and orderly format.
This will enhance your problem solving skills, make it easier for you to catch
errors in your solutions, and it will make it easier for me to follow your
solutions and assign partial credit.
2. Word Questions: When
answering word questions from the textbook, be sure to explain or justify all
of your answers. This gives me a way to assign partial credit if your answer is
incorrect.
3. Numerical Problems:
At minimum, you must list any
equations used, show numerical substitution into the equations and give the
answer with proper units. Failure to do so will cost you points, and in some
cases will render your assignment unacceptable. It is to your advantage to show
intermediate steps in your solution. This way if your answer is incorrect I can
still assign partial credit for your work.
